  4. Country Description:  Finland is a highly developed stable democracy with a
  5. modern economy.  Tourist facilities are widely available.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  A tourist or business visa is
  8. not required for stays of up to three months (the 90-day period begins when
  9. entering the Nordic area: Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland).  For
  10. further information concerning entry requirements for Finland, travelers can
  11. contact the Embassy of Finland at 3301 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.,
  12. Washington, D.C. 20008, tel (202) 298-5800, or the nearest Finnish Consulate
  13. General in Los Angeles or New York.

  15. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities are widely available.  The public
  16. hospital system will not honor foreign credit cards and/or U. S. insurance
  17. coverage.  However, private hospitals and clinics which accept major credit
  18. cards are widely available.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid
  19. outside the United States.  Travelers have found that in some cases, a
  20. letter from their carrier describing supplemental medical insurance with
  21. specific overseas coverage has proven to be useful.  Further information on
  22. health matters can be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's
  23. international travelers' hotline on (404)332-4559.

  25. Crime Information:  Finland has a low crime rate.  The nationwide phone
  26. number for police/emergency services in Finland is 112.  The loss or theft
  27. abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to local police and
  28. the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  The Department of State's pamphlet
  29. "A Safe Trip Abroad" provides useful information on protecting personal
  30. security while traveling abroad.  It is available from the Superintendent of
  31. Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402.

  33. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  34. which they are traveling.  Penalties for possession, use, or dealing in
  35. illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences
  36. and fines.

  38. Registration:  Americans who register at the Consular Section of the U. S.
  39. Embassy may obtain updated information on travel and security in Finland.
